Gareth Williams is a space scientist working on information that the Cassini spacecraft sends back to Earth. He’s developing new kinds of maths to try to work out what makes the waves in the rings of Saturn.
He creates computer models of Saturn’s F ring.
He uses his models to make predictions about how the ring could behave. If the predictions are wrong then he works to improve the model. Bit by bit, the model gets better and better.
Gareth shares his ideas with other people. They can be useful to other people who also use computer models.
Modelling is a good example of how scientists work. Read more on modelling here.
So, what are the benefits of the Cassini-Huygens mission?
