Climate Change

What is climate change?

Climate change refers to long-term trends in the average climate, such as changes in average temperature. Climates do change naturally over long periods of time although climate change in the ‘modern context’ refers to a change in climate that is attributable directly or indirectly to human activity that alters atmospheric composition.

Is climate change happening and what are the consequences?

See our PEEP section on Climate Change for updated information on the causes and consequences of climate change.

What is causing climate change?

The main cause of climate change is an enhanced greenhouse effect leading to global warming. The increase in this effect is largely due to the production of extra greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and CFC’s. Most of these gases are due to human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels.

What can be done to slow or prevent further climate change?

There is no simple answer and the ‘climate change’ problem will not be solved in the next few years. The international convention on climate change – The Kyoto Protocol, is probably the most significant way in which climate change can be addressed globally, although individuals (locally) can, by their own actions, adapt and help to slow climate change.
