Energy in trouble

The world economy and energy

What will happen to the world economy without cheap energy?

While energy has driven the development of technology since the Industrial Revolution, it has also driven commerce. Machines driven by cheap energy gave us faster, cheaper manufacturing and transport, allowing people to make and sell more and more things.

In many countries, the increased wealth that resulted meant that people desired bigger houses with more heating, and eventually holidays, cars and televisions. All of these in turn use more and more energy.

There is a spiral pattern of energy use leading to wealth leading to more energy use.

Question: What do you think would happen to the world economy if there were a sudden disruption to energy supplies?
